Gateway Customer Support — What is it?

Hey FS,   I bought a laptop down in Calgary. A gateway P-7901h; a computer Gateway doesn't seem to think exists. I bought this laptop in August of '09 and have had nothing but problems -- problems I took to the gateway support site instead of here. Big mistake.   So here's my issue. The machine runs slow. Now, I mean, I'm in a 3d modeling class, and the render speed on this laptop is three times faster than my dedicated PC. It's definitely a fast machine. But it's as if it has a disease -- sometimes it gets triggered attacks, and sometimes it doesn't. When it does, everything freezes. It chugs. It thinks. It fails. At that point in time, I have to try to crash as many frozen programs as I can (ranging from big programs like adobe programs down to internet browsers and chat systems) before it blue screens and dies. Generally, however, when I manage to tell it to shut down, its unable to and gets stuck at the shutting down screen. Obviously I have to force shutdown at that point.   When I boot it back up, either after a force shut down or a regular shutdown with no problems, it will at random intervals do a compulsive checkdisk. There will always be errors. In the past week, it has done five checkdisks.   Furthermore, and this is where the issues began, my video driver is unable to operate consistently. Any time I am in the middle of something - say, a gaming session, as it is a gaming laptop, the video card driver will crash. I've tried many drivers, ranging from manufacturers, NVIDIAS, 186, 195, etc. Same issue in every one, so I can't bring myself to believe it is the driver. And yes, I removed the previous ones entirely. Safemode, driversweeper, whole deal. The issue is also random. I can not accurately predict when the driver will crash, nor can I predict if it will be able to recover or not. Sometimes it does.   At one point it wouldn't turn on at all. I was forced to reinstall Windows. This was a gateway free upgrade Windows -- 7 x64bit home. I deleted the partitions and redid everything. Same issues. I went to gateway customer support. After unwillingly following their instructions to reformat again, another two times (up to three now), I decided I was going to rollback to vista. Unfortunately, my gateway recovery disks did not work. There was an issue with one of the files. Still determined to rollback to vista to see if the issues were with the new Windows 7, I went back to gateway support on my PC. They were unable to help and again had me reinstall Windows 7.   It has been several months now and the problems are getting more frequent. Freezes, crashes, unresponsiveness, shutdowns, driver failures, etc. Reformatting every third day is not proper customer support, especially a machine of this calibre. I decided, yet again, to try gateway support. It's short, and I've probably typed more by now than this (sorry), so I'll show the entire conversation: 14 Feb 2010 12:11:34 AM GWSI446 says: If I understand you correctly , the computer is performing slow and the video card crashes and you have to shutdwon thw computer manually . Am I correct? 14 Feb 2010 12:12:08 AM Khal Cooper says: All separate incidences, but yes. It freezes. 14 Feb 2010 12:12:27 AM GWSI446 says: I apologize you for the inconvenience khal 14 Feb 2010 12:12:36 AM GWSI446 says: May I know since when are you facing this issue? 14 Feb 2010 12:13:00 AM Khal Cooper says: Unsure of the exact date. A couple of months. 14 Feb 2010 12:15:15 AM GWSI446 says: okay. 14 Feb 2010 12:15:33 AM GWSI446 says: Have you tried the restore process on the computer/ 14 Feb 2010 12:15:38 AM Khal Cooper says: Yes. 14 Feb 2010 12:16:27 AM GWSI446 says: Okay , In such a case the only option what we have is to perform the recovery . 14 Feb 2010 12:16:43 AM Khal Cooper says: It has been reformatted five times. 14 Feb 2010 12:17:02 AM Khal Cooper says: I have been told the same thing every time I've come to gateway support. 14 Feb 2010 12:21:34 AM GWSI446 says: I undertand you caoncern Jason. 14 Feb 2010 12:21:50 AM Khal Cooper says: Excuse me? 14 Feb 2010 12:22:08 AM GWSI446 says: In order to Isolate issue in a better way, please do contact our phone support number which is 1-800-846-2301 14 Feb 2010 12:22:15 AM GWSI446 says: It is a toll free number . 14 Feb 2010 12:22:24 AM GWSI446 says: please do call them for support . 14 Feb 2010 12:22:42 AM Khal Cooper says: I'm going to assume you're distracted. 14 Feb 2010 12:23:41 AM GWSI446 says: I am sorry Khal, Since your computer has multiple issue , so I request you to contact and speak to our voice technician so that the issue can ba isolated . 14 Feb 2010 12:23:59 AM Khal Cooper says: I'll do that.   If you search the gateway website for the phone number he provided, you get this: " For customer service and support, call 1-800-846-2301 between 7am - 10pm Centeral Time Monday through Friday." As you can see from the timestamps, it's Saturday. Past midnight. And while I don't know what time Centeral is, I'm assuming it's pretty close to central.  I decided to call anyways. The automated voice message told me if I purchased my gateway from a Canadian outlet, to call a different number. 604-639-0979. This number isn't in use, and it isn't listed on Gateways site.   I would like some thoughts on this matter and what to try next. It is still in warranty, but from what I can tell, this warranty is absolutely useless. I don't need a warranty to tell me to reformat my computer when it isn't responding properly. Is there something Futureshop can do? Or something a computering guru would like to suggest?   I'm all ears, especially since you took the time to read this novel. I apologize if I sound frustrated at any point in time, because, frankly, I am a little.

Black Screen at Startup

Hi   I have the HP Pavillion dv6700, model #dv6934ca Laptop. I bought it approximately 1 year and 4 months ago. My problem is that when I start up my computer, the screen is black, but I can see my mouse. I tried starting it in Safe Mode but that doesn't work. Can anyone help me with this? I'm guessing its the hard drive, or maybe the video card, but I'm not sure what to do about it - if i can get it fixed or need to replace it. I would really like to avoid losing all the information on the laptop as I haven't backed it up in a while.   Anything will help, thanks!

Re: Need advice on replacing ACER AM5620 Video card, FAN, and RAM

Your motherboard can handle up to 8GB of RAM(4x2GB), and I would recommend installing RAM in pairs for better performance.  So if you wanted to have 6GB, I'd suggest having 2x2GB and 2x1GB in there, but you could use 3x2GB and it would work, it just would be a bit slower than my suggested configuration.   As for your Video card and CPU fan, I'd suggest you replace one and see if the noise goes away before replacing the other.  Also, $100 for both a CPU fan and a new video card is a rather tight budget.  Especially considering that your power supply isn't powerful enough to run any of the cards I see on our website.  So you'll have to find an ultra low power card for your machine, or upgrade your PSU as well, which is definitely going over $100. What I would recommend on a tight budget is that you get a small upgrade in a PSU, such as the Dynex 400W , and combine that with a low end video card(that is still better than what you have now) such as the BFG Geforce 210 .  This combo does go over $100 already without a CPU fan replacement though.

Need advice on replacing ACER AM5620 Video card, FAN, and RAM

Hi everyone! I bought my computer about year and half ago at futureshop, here is the model:     Computer:  ACER AM5620 E5301A )   Processor: Intel Core2 Duo Q6600 Processor @ 2.40GHz RAM:  3GB DDR2 Ram 333MHz  (I guess  3x1GB ) Graphics card:  NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT (256MB) Motherboard model : ACER G33T-AM System:  32 bit Vista-Home Hard Drive: 500GB hard drive Others: Multi DVD Burner     after using till now It become very noisy, I opened the computer case and found it really dusty,so i cleaned the fan and video card.. but the noise didn't go away, after a few test, i recognized the noise mainly from the video card, and after i tried many ways to slove it ...finally it drove me crazy! >.< i decided to replace the video card and the fan..  That noise almost got me a headache, espically when playing games. My budget is around 100$(including PC fan) for replacing video card, any good advice?     Another ques. is that if I want to upgrade my RAM to 6-8 GB(cuz I need to use VMWARE for a vitual machine running), what is the good way of doing it? go for 3x2 GB 667MHz ram? I know for sure it needs a 64-bit OS, but besides that, do I need change anything else for compatibility?(mother board?)   I appreciate someone could help me out..
